What is a rack

The rack is the steering system used in the car and in the van

The principle of operation is based on a spiral gear (coil) which moves a toothed shaft by converting the rotary motion into a linear one, this movement moves the shaft to the right or left by changing the direction of the wheels whose hubs are connected to the end bars and these in turn with the spherical ends of the rack (half bar)..

Rack types

There are three categories that are currently being fitted to cars by the automotive industry.
  • Hydraulic Rack
  • Electric Rack (EPS)
  • Mechanical Rack (used in very old cars, and in new ones where their steering system works electrically having the assistance of the steering column which is located just below the steering wheel).

Rack damage

The most common fault that occurs in a hydraulic rack is the leakage of its liquids (oils).

Leakage may be due to stress on the seals due to both long-term use due to pressure and other external factors (such as wear of the toothed shaft due to wear of the protective bellows located at the ends of the rack at the junction with the half bar , resulting in the penetration of foreign bodies such as moisture, mud, soil).

In mechanical rack the most common problem is, due to long-term use, play is created in the rings and bearings of the hanger, with the result that when driving mainly on uneven roads there is noise (bump), the same occurs in abrupt maneuvers.

Electric rack (EPS)

More and more manufacturers are now turning to the solution of universal electrical assistance EPS (Electrically Power Steering) of the steering system.

To do this, sensors are used that are placed on the steering column, receive data from the driver's movements and "send" them to the vehicle control unit..

There, a lot of data is evaluated, such as the position of the steering wheel, the torque paid by the driver, the speed, etc. Immediately after, the electric motor, which is mounted either on the rack or on the steering column, takes action and helps to change the angular position of the wheels.

WHAT IS A STEERING

The steering is used in commercial and agricultural vehicles and trucks.

What does the steering consist of?

The steering consists of a gear screw.

The worm is used in commercial and agricultural vehicles and trucks. Consisting of a gear bolt, it is widely used in the most common types of steering systems for most vehicles due to its low cost and easy constructionυ.

The endless hydraulic system has been used due to the increase in vehicle weight which affects the steering axles. In order to reduce the power of the driver needed to turn the steering wheel, additional assistance is applied to the existing steering system.
The most common assistance in the truck is hydraulic, in recent years an electro-hydraulic device has been integrated which is electrically controlled by the vehicle control unit (ECU) and adjusts the steering power according to the speed of the vehicle..

All power steering systems are designed to allow the vehicle to be driven manually when the engine is not running or if the power supply has been damaged.

Hydraulic steering damages

The most common faults in a hydraulic steering are:

  • Leaking hydraulic steering.
  • Clearance (gaps) when driving resulting in instability of the vehicle on the road.
  • Loss of power when turning the steering wheel.
  • Incorrect reset of the vehicle when turning the steering wheel
  • Difficulty turning the steering wheel in one direction (right or left).
